Q 8. Will CDP budgets not simply be absorbed by the partnerships?
No. We will take steps to prevent that happening in the short term. Over time local priorities will be set locally within the context of the overall redesigned programme. The upcoming Budget will determine all available programme funding. In the case of viable CDPs it is anticipated that funding for core CDP staff will be ringfenced for 2010.

What does "viable" CDP's mean ?
ReplyDeleteYes, I wondered that myself???
ReplyDeleteI would hazzard a guess that the Minister is reffering to "Financially Viable"!!!!
I would doubt very strongly that he means anything other because it's very clear that he dosn't understand "Community Development".
How can a CDP be viable without funding- even if they do access additional funding -which in this climate is more and more difficult
ReplyDeleteThis undermines or does not even recognise what the role of CDPs is in the community
When will the criteria by which CDps will be deamed 'viable' be published?
ReplyDeleteWho drew (or is drawing up these criteria and on what international best practice is this method of selection being based?
...and finally does the back of a matchbox constitute international best practice?
In the SHORT TERM - safe until 2011?
ReplyDeleteDefinition:
ReplyDeleteViable - Adj. 1 capable of living and developing. 2 workable.
My project is viable minister. We have created over €30m in investment into our area, created over 90 jobs, trained hundreds of people.
Are we viable?
If projects are not viable - why have you continued to give them funding over the years and not challenged them.
'Viable', indeed. I can only echo some of the comments above - but I would like to know the process by which viability has been assessed, and on what criteria. Financial? Boxes ticked? Positive outcomes for people? CES must have an accountability (I hope) to clarify their methods so that community workers and population can see that the assessment has been fair: transparency is necessary and warrantable...I'd also like to know the cost of the CES assessments!
ReplyDeletethe Community Development Programme has got to be the most viable Programme in Ireland if only the people who are making these decidions understood what COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT was!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat is short term?
ReplyDeleteLocal priorities are set locally by CDPs that is why we work so well. Maybe we are not looking for enough money? Perhaps if we squandered millions we would be seen as being more viable? Why can they not believe we do the immense work we do on such small budgets. The only thing the upcoming Budget will determine is the death of a vital service to our communities.
So does this mean that CDP staff will be redeployed or made redundant if the project is deemed to not be 'viable'?
